🐾🐶 Keswick Scruffs 🐶🐾
We had a wonderful morning visiting Keswick Scruffs today. Certainly one for your diary if you are a dog lover thinking of staying with us in June.
This lovely community dog show take place annually in Fitz Park- a beautiful park with an accessible pathway around the outside, a great play park for little visitors, and a fab social enterprise cafe @cafewestcumbria. With the River Greta flowing through the park and views of the surrounding hills it’s lovely place to visit at any time (we like to enjoy a chippy tea in the park in the summer) but Scruffs makes it all the more inviting.
Our children were in heaven today with so many four legged friends to be made. We even found one of todays veteran pooches who had wheels of his own and two adorable German Shepards who looked very hot in todays ☀️
For visitors who are sensitive to noise we recommend bringing ear defenders as there is music playing at the event. We also recommend them on sunny days in Keswick in general as we often have fighter jets passing over.
A wonderful local event full of fun resulting in lots of questions about ‘can we get a dog?’ 🤭

You might have known as soon as we added this lovely new garden furniture for our guests the weather would change 🤦🏽‍♀️
You have to love the English weather. BUT…. The good news is after a week of rain the sun is back here in the @lakedistrict
We hope this weeks guests can enjoy sitting on the patio listening to the relaxing sounds of the woodland, the tweets of the birds and if they are lucky a sighting of the red squirrels that live here 😊

Finishing cleaning day in the sun with the smallest member of the Lakes For All team enjoying a stroll along our nearest accessible walk…..JUST 1 MILE AWAY!
Can you believe this slice of heaven is just 1 MILE FROM ROSE COTTAGE?
Parking at the Low Saw Mill car park on the Lowther Estate (follow the signs for Askham) this lovely river path makes a wonderful 2km out and back accessible walk.
REASONS WE LOVE THIS WALK
1. It’s so close and suitable for wheelchairs, buggy’s, and bikes.
2. Enjoy the sensory of nature with our family. Walter LOVES touching the trees as you can see.
3. Herons often frequent in the river - we saw one today but he was camera shy!
4. Just turn the sound up on our video, it speaks for itself….calm
5. Plenty of space to enjoy a picnic
I just wish we had smell-ivision so you could enjoy the aroma of the blanket of wild garlic we saw today 🧄 if like us you enjoy bringing nature and cooking together here is our big tip. Pick the leaves, blitz, mix with butter and freeze for delicious homemade garlic butter 👌🏽

It has been a busy first 6 months in business with more birthdays, anniversaries and family get togethers than we can count.

🏰 LOWTHER CASTLE 🏰
Beautiful in every season, @lowther_castle is the nearest attraction to Rose Cottage, located just 2minutes drive away.
This magnificent castle has something for everyone whether you’re a gardening pro, a history buff, a food lover, keen hiker or have children who need to burn off some energy. As you can tell from our many photos, this is a firm favourite with our family and I never get tired of capturing its beauty 📸
Here are the reasons we love it so much….
🚙 2minutes drive from Rose Cottage with a free car park, blue badge parking and electric charging spaces
🍽️ the wonderful @lowthercastle_cafe serves tasty hot and cold meals within the main restaurant and has a take away option for coffee, cakes and ice cream within a marquee. We recommend the Lowther special ‘honey on toast’ flavour 🍦A second take away cafe is available seasonally at the #lostcastle
🛍️ the on-site gift shop offers lots of local crafts and treats including honey produced on the estate.
♿️ there are two disabled toilets, one in the main courtyard and one at the Lost Castle Cafe. There is currently no changing places on site at present
🛗accessibility through the museum currently involves a slightly temperamental lift and sometimes an alternative entrance into the grounds is used. Staff are always happy to help and the good news is planning permission is in place for a new replacement ramp (it is a listed building)
🎟️ Lowther’s grounds can be enjoyed as a free day out with a lovely riverside walk and access to the courtyard area, or alternatively you can pay to enter to experience the gardens, and lost castle adventure play park.
🏰the lost castle adventure play park is fantastic for kids and big kids alike. Whilst the play park does not have any inclusive swings etc it does have access.
🎭 there are often art installations, open air theatre performances and lots more in the grounds so check out their website before you plan your visit

🍂INTRODUCING TALKIN TARN 🍂
It’s been a while since we showcased one of the many wonderful places to visit here in the #lakedistrict so we thought we would wrap up warm and venture to @talkintarn to share it with you.
Located approx 35minutes north of Rose Cottage, Talking Tarn is a fab place to enjoy nature with its inclusive walking route around the lake suitable with prams, toddlers on bikes (as you can see Amelia demonstrate), wheelchairs and trampers alike. Here are a few of its credentials
🚗 The large car park has blue badge parking.
🥾 A lovely 2.5km circuit around the lake features picnic spots, carved animals, willow dens and a tranquil accessible bird hide too.
🦼Tramper hire is available at Talkin Tarn and requires booking in advance, more info is available via @talkintarn or @lakedistrictcumbria website.
🍽️ There is a fabulous cafe serving breakfasts, lunches and delicious treats. As you can see, it’s never too cold for ice cream in our household 🍦
🚾 whilst there is no @changingplacesuk there is a large accessible toilet with a shower located near the cafe.
⛵️ watersports hire including kayaks, canoes, paddle boards is available seasonally at weekends and school holidays. Check the website for details.
🎣 and 🏊🏼‍♀️ fishing and open water swimming on the tarn is also seasonal with details available on the website.
Nearby is the lovely village of Brampton with several cafes and pubs too. A great day out regardless of the season and extremely popular with local dog owners too.
We recommend saving this one for your autumn visit when the tarn is quieter and the leaves are golden🍁

We have had a wonderful weekend @keswickfestival making some great connections with accessible outdoor activity providers for you to experience during your stay at Rose Cottage 🏡
We cannot wait to tell you more about each one of them and the facilities they provide, but for now here is a quick summary:
@anyonecanuk are a lovely husband and wife business who can offer our guests bespoke activity days from canoeing, sailing, and climbing throughout the @lakedistrictcumbria Perfect for adrenaline seekers 🛶⛵️🧗‍♂️
@calvertlakes located 30min drive from rose cottage has a multi-sensory hydrotherapy pool available for private hire and riding stables for horse lovers 🏊‍♂️🐴
@lakedistrictnpa who continue to work and improve their #mileswithoutstiles wheelchair accessible walks in our area 🥾
@bendriggtrust located 40min drive from Rose Cottage offering outdoor activities.
@nationaltrust who host a number of historical attractions in #cumbria with accessible facilities such as space to change toilets, tramper hire and bsl or neurodivergent tours. ♿️👩‍🦼
The festival brings a fantastic atmosphere to #keswick with a mix of sporting events, music, food and outdoor providers. It was fantastic to see such a well represented accessible zone to the festival this year including a @mobiloo.uk And of course the ☀️ made the lake and mountain backdrop sing 🤩

🌳 INTRODUCING ACORN BANK 🌳
Today we took a stroll in the sunshine to test out @ntacornbank for you. Located 16min drive from Rose cottage.
This wonderful Manor House dates back to the 13th century and is owned by the @nationaltrust brining all the fantastic accessible elements you expect from NT. Some key features for you to enjoy are:
🏡 the house has just 3 rooms open to the public including a second hand book shop.
⚙️ the water mill is in working order and you can even buy wholemeal flour ground on site. The mill is open sat-sun and bank holidays. Sadly, there is currently no wheelchair access to the see the mill itself though speaking to the volunteers we understand this is something the water mill trust and national trust are working to change. There is, however, wheelchair access into an information room where a video about the mill is played and a viewing platform where you can see the mill, river, and if you are lucky, otters frolicking in the water 🦦
🦻 BSL and neurodivergent tours are available. See NT website for details.
🍽️ there is a wonderful cafe with indoor and outdoor seating serving freshly made produce. The coconut and rhubarb cake and the pasta girasoli were devine!
♿️ there is a space to change toilet with a hoist and changing bed but no shower, hence it not being classified as a @changingplacesuk
🦼tramper hire is available, booking advised. The blue dashed line shown on the map through the woods to the mill and around the gardens is suitable for both trampers and electric wheelchairs. We also met a lovely family on the trail with a manual wheelchair who managed on the gravel path with a bit of energy required.
🧚🏾 along the trail you will find fairy houses, games and interesting spots for children.
🌸 the gardens are beautiful and accessible. See if you can spot the smooth & crested newts in the pond!
🌱 you will also find a lovely herb and veg garden which are also accessible.
All in all a wonderfully tranquil place to spend a couple of hours finding shade in the woods or enjoying the views and gardens.

🚂 K2T Railway Accessible Walks 🚂
This fantastic walking/ wheeling/ cycling route is along the old railway line between Keswick and Threlkeld.
As a family we love this walk, it is another fantastic multi generational option. Even more so since it’s improvements following the 2015 floods, which have drastically improved its accessibility credentials…
🥞 With the exception of approx 50m of zigzag path at the Threlkeld end it is pretty much flat as a pancake.
🧑‍🦽The surface is tarmac making it suitable for buggies, manual or electric wheelchairs and for bikes too. (You will note our happy little cyclist featured in the reel).
📚It takes you through some interesting tunnels and has historical information boards along the route.
🍦There is often a handily located ice cream van parked up at roughly half way along. Great for an energy boost for younger family members.
🚌 There are hourly buses which run between Keswick and Penrith (number X4/ X5), stopping at Threlkeld, meaning you can opt for a 5km walk and catch the bus back or make it a longer 10km walk by walking out and back.
☕️ Keswick has plenty of cafe options to choose from. However the route finishes by Fitz Park hosting a great children’s playground and the perfectly located West Cafe which supports adults with learning difficulties.
Located less than 30minutes from Rose Cottage it is a great option for the whole family during your stay at Rose Cottage or in the North @lakedistrictnpa
